Throughout the research programme, we will organise several events such as a Kick-off and three ClimateCafes. If you would like to be involved in our events, please contact us here. Or sign up below.
Upcoming Events: Climatecafe Spring 2022
We are organising a second ClimateCafe in the spring of 2022.

On Friday 25 June 2021, ClimateCafe participants will present their findings during an interactive online session from 9.00h-11.00h. Afterwards, we facilitate an open discussion on our research and invite all stake, share and value-holders to guide forming our LivingLab. A public zoom-link will be posted here, so Save the Date! Do you want to get involved in our research, do not hesitate to contact us.

ClimateCafe LivingLab Grensmaas 21-25 June 2021
The research programme LivingLab Grensmaas will organise the first Grensmaas ClimateCafe edition from 21 to 25 June 2021. In a ClimateCafe, a multidisciplinary group of young professionals and students are invited to work on a practical challenge. This is done by fieldwork and workshops embedded in multiple fields of science and art. The integrated approach of ClimateCafe aims to enhance a system approach towards climate change and environmental issues.
In this (hybrid) ClimateCafe, we target the relation between drought, biodiversity and perceived risks for the location Meers and Kotem in order to contribute to our first two research objectives:

In this (hybrid) ClimateCafe, we target the relation between drought, biodiversity and perceived risks for the location Meers and Kotem in order to contribute to our first two research objectives:
- Understand functioning of ecological, economic, and social systems, including drivers and mechanisms of change
- Developing a workbench to monitor viability of ecological, economic, and social systems in real time
Programme
On Monday, we will be introduced to the Grensmaas region, stakeholders and inhabitants. We will hear stories and see images to understand how the landscape has changed, from past to present. On Tuesday, we will go out in the field to examine the water quality and invasive macro fauna (such as the Killershrimp!) of the Grensmaas near Meers and Kotem, and learn about drought impacts on the river. Wednesday is also devoted to fieldwork, we will go into the town of Meers and Kotem to identify existing adaptation measures and perceptions regarding drought. On Thursday, we will combine all of our newly required knowledge in a system analysis and use methods embedded in art and design thinking to creatively address drought issues. Finally, on Friday, it is time to present and discuss our findings to a wide variety of stakeholders.

Please note that mornings (9.00am - 12.30pm) are filled with a programme and the afternoon is free for group-work. Tuesday and Wednesday will be in the field*. If you are not able to come to Meers and/or Kotem, you can follow an online-livestream. Monday, Thursday and Friday morning will be online. If you wish to participate in part of the programme, this is possible, please indicate this in your application. As we will interact with inhabitants and professionals, part of the programme will be in Dutch, we will take this into account when making groups.
For who?
We target a multidisciplinary group of students and young professionals. It doesn’t matter what your background is, as long as you have an interest in the environment of the Grensmaas and would like to learn new (field)methods and want to have impact. Stakeholders are very welcome to join the full programme or part of the programme!
Sign-up!
Students and young professionals can sign up for the ClimateCafe through the application form below. Sign-up is open from 11 May until 11 June.
National Drought Challenge
Through this ClimateCafe, you can also be part of the Dutch national Water/Drought Challenge, check this page to find out more.
*If covid-19 restrictions allow fieldwork. Alternatively, we will prepare a hybrid version so you won't have to sit behind your screen the whole week!
